POPQuiz #5 – AI Spy: The AI Scene in Romania

Hello again! We went away for a while to focus on other parts of our competition – but now we’re back. And we’ve brought friends.

(Psst: it might be gettng late, but you still have time to register!)

POPQuiz #5: Powered by PatSeer!

We’re delighted to say that this POPQuiz is powered by PatSeer, our first Major Tier Sponsor for the 2019 Patent Olympiad.

PatSeer is a leading patent search and analysis solution provider created by Gridlogics, who were there that warm spring night in Atlanta when we first dreamed up the Patent Olympiad.

They were our very first industry cheerleaders, so we’re very happy to working with them as Sapphire sponsors for this year’s Patent Olympiad.

AI SPY With my searcher’s eye

If you’ve seen the programme for EPOPIC 2019, you’ve probably noticed more than a few sessions in Bucharest focussed on the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in patent search.

Earlier this year, PatSeer also announced the launch of their own AI-powered engine, ReleSense™, a NLP text processing engine that powers features in PatSeer such as Semantic Searching, AI-assisted Boolean search, Intelligent Categorization, and Predictive Analytics.

The engine is trained on publicly available patents, scientific journals, clinical trials, and associated data sources – and, importantly – is built using Ethical AI, meaning that the engine is not trained on user-generated data such as search queries, annotations or behaviour tracking.

Because AI is a hot topic in patent search, it will be the focus of POPQuiz #5.

What will you spy with your searcher’s eye?

The Scenario

It’s less than two weeks until you’ll be in Bucharest to compete in Patent Olympiad 2019.

You’re taking a break from your current search project, and are checking out some of the “sneak peeks” that Andrea Davis has posted on Patent Olympiad’s Linkedin feed. The People’s Palace tour looks amazing, and the technology-themed restaurant in Bucharest looks like it will be a lot of fun.

Your colleague pokes her head into your office. “Hey, you’re heading to Bucharest soon, aren’t you?” she says, nodding toward your monitor. “For that Patent Olympian thing?”

“Patent Olympiad,” you say. “But yes.Why do you ask?”

“My team has been looking at the artificial intelligence opportunities in Europe, and Romania keeps popping up. We’re wondering if there’s anything or anyone we should know about in the region, IP-wise.”

She grins. “What do you say? Want to add a couple of days to your trip?”

The Challenge

Your colleague is hoping to identify inventors or companies in Romania with AI-related intellectual property, and she is hoping that you might be able to make first contact with one or two of the most promising.

She realizes you won’t have the time to do a comprehensive report on the state of AI-related intellectual property in Romania. She knows, however, that you have a good track record of quickly identifying technologies and companies that would interest her.

HOW to play

1) Do a search to find Romanian inventors and companies that have recent patent activity that relates to the growing field of AI.

2) Decide which two inventors or companies that you would most like to add your itinerary while visiting Romania, and tell us why you would choose them.

3) Provide a link to a sample patent or other justification for your choice.

As with our previous POPQuiz challenges, you can share in the comments below, on social media (use the links below), or via our Google form (yes, we usually use SurveyMonkey, but this week it’s a Google form).

We’ll start reviewing submissions after 23:59 AoE time Friday, October 18, and publish some of the most interesting answers the following week, just before Patent Olympiad 2019.

If you’re sharing on social media, remember to tag us (@patentolympiad) and use the hashtags #POPquiz and #patentolympiad.

If you like, you can use PatSeer to work on this POPQuiz Challenge. You can use this link: https://patseer.com/event/patent-olympiad-2019/.

It does have some handy features for this search, like some very granular searching options. And AI, of course.

Happy Hunting!
