GOLD Winner

Christian Dank is an Austrian organic chemist working for the University of Vienna. Besides his research in organic and medicinal chemistry and teaching at University level, he has been working with Laudea Research. Apart from work, Christian enjoys playing music, running, wine, and boardgames.

SILVER Winner

Sara Motahari is a patent information professional who has been contributing her expertise to ASML’s Intellectual Property (IP) department since 2017. She brings a diverse and robust academic background to her role, holding a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, a master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Technology, and a post-master’s degree in physics from Eindhoven University of Technology.

BRONZE Winner

Sander De Vrieze has been a patent information specialist at Centexbel since 2010. Centexbel is a Belgian research institute and a PATLIB centre of the EPO. He holds a PhD in materials science, a Master of Science and Engineering and is the inventor of several patents. Sander is a member of BEPIUG, the Belgian Patent Information User Group. Sander has chaired sessions and spoken at conferences such as the EPO Patent Information Conference and the EPO PATLIB Conference.

GOLD Winner

Manolis Chrysallos is currently working in the patent department of ASML in the field of semiconductors. His first touch with IP was when he worked for the Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research, in the field of Telecommunications. That led him later to a full time IP position at Philips Lighting, and later at ASML. He was  born in the sunny island of Rhodes and holds a post master degree in ICT from Eindhoven University of Technology, as well as a Master in Electrical and Computer Engineer from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

SILVER Winner

Dr. Agnes Wycisk works as Expert IP Research in the thyssenkrupp Intellectual Property Department and conducts patent searches in the fields of industrial plant construction and mechanical engineering. After completing her doctorate, she gained her first professional experience as a patent researcher at CPA Global in London. She studied Chemistry at the University of Paderborn and has a PhD in Chemistry. During her time as PhD student Ms. Wycisk mainly focused on the synthesis and characterisation of water soluble temperature sensitive star polymers.

BRONZE Winner

Marjolaine Thulin, B.Sc. and with a degree in Informatics from the Stockholm University, has been a patent searcher since the early 1980s. After working for the Swedish Board for Technical Development and at Patent information AB she joined in 1992 AWA Sweden AB, part of AWA Holding AB a leading IP firm in Europe. She is a senior patent information specialist and Qualified Patent Information Professional (QPIP). Marjolaine is a member of SACEPO-PDI and of SIPIG (Swedish IP Information Group) and has been a speaker at several international patent information conferences.

The winners of the Inaugural Patent Olympiad are:

GOLD Winner

Fredrik Magnusson is a Patent Information Professional at Uppdragshuset, working with patent searches and analysis. He studied vehicle engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and has a master’s degree in aeronautics/fluid mechanics. From 2015 until 2017 Fredrik worked at the Swedish Patent and Registration Office, as patent examiner in the unit for transport and vehicle technology.

SILVER Winner

Takuya Nagayoshi is a chief analyst at IP Research Institute of NGB Corp. in Japan. He has an extensive experience in patent research and analysis in a broad range technology areas, especially in the field of computer science and medical devices. He has been working for clients both inside and outside Japan on a variety of search projects such as clearance search, invalidity search, patentability search, patent landscaping, and patent portfolio analysis.

Dr. Wieczorek has a PhD in organic chemistry and MSc degree in biotechnology. Her scientific research included projects investigating new active substances, among them potential medicines. She boasts research and business experience from Italy, Austria, United Kingdom, Germany and Poland. She spent multiple years in major European research and scientific facilities. Outside of academia she gained significant business experience working with customers from all over the world.

Dr. Wieczorek managed IP research projects within the field of plastics, energy industry, fuels, gas and oils, pharmaceuticals, food industry, biotechnology, catalysts, fuel cells technology, paper and pulp industries, detergents, cosmetics, etc. She excels in novelty, infringement, validity, clearance, state of the art, collection, landscapes and chemical structure patent searching.
